Survival 🏕️

Groups 5, 6, 7 have made it to survival!

Big Ben (our survival specialist) has played some games, got us to come up with group names and chants and right now is teaching us how to light a fire!

A fire needs 3 elements Fuel, Oxygen and heat to start and stay alive.

To light the fire we need to use flint, steel to create heat, cotton balls, newspaper and kindling as fuel and oxygen!

We even have to hunt for our own firewood soon!

The Trip

The year 6's looking full of anticipation for what camp could bring. Boy Oh boy have they settled in quickly!!!
Make sure you ask about the camp song when we get back 😉
Mrs Cometti's voice is already disappearing! 🎶

Kayaking

Kayaking was the highlight of my day! My favourite activity was a game called 'Playing the Piano'.
The aim is to run across the front of the kayaks as fast as you can WITHOUT falling in! I had to have a second go but was determined to complete the challenge.
(Yes I did it!)
Remember to use your growth mindset when taking on new challenges!

We made it!

The year 6 teachers are really excited we have made it to camp! We cannot wait to get stuck into all the activities!
GO TEAM 6 💪

Chinese New Year

At Sunnyhills we believe it's important to share and celebrate all cultures! On Friday we celebrated Chinese new year!
In fact, in Auckland we have about 23% Chinese, making up almost a quarter of our community!

We heard from a couple of learners in the class about what Chinese new year means for them, spoke about how wearing Red can bring good luck and learned how to do the traditional Chinese dragon dance!

Nicole even got a chance to play an instrument on stage! Woohooo

GEMS, Team Building, and using a Growth Mindset

In weeks 1 & 2 we focused on what it means to use our GEMS, working as a team and using a growth mindset! This included having a super fun year 6 Team building day.
Each challenge was different and required us to work together in order to complete it.

The games we played were the Standing long jump relay, The Human knot challenge, Hoop relay, The Mindfield, Frogs & Ponds, and the silent Playground challenge!

In the afternoon we looked at the challenges and reflected on what they might mean for us this year. We also looked at this growth mindset A-Z poster  and thought about a way we could recreate this to make our class treaty!

So watch this space and we will present the final treaty shortly after camp :)

The Human Knot challenge! Possibly one of the trickiest activities!

The Human knot challenge requires us to:

  • Be patient,
  • Use a growth mindset
  • Show empathy to others,
  • Help when we see someone stuck (literally),
  • Take our time to think,
  • Collaborate,
  • Speak kindly to one another
  • Encourage each other
  • aaaand of course work as a team!

Week 1 2019

Room 1 had a fantastic first week back at school getting to know each other, prepping for School camp, going over our GEMS and school values and playing a ton of fun games!
